While reading blogs this week, I stumbled across this really neat site: Environmental Graffiti. It is a site that brings you an awesome mix of news about the environment. Check it out!
I was particularly drawn to the post about Abkhazia’s Abandoned Railway. There are some really beautiful photographs of a former USSR railroad station. Taken by Ilya Varlamov, the photographs show a time long since past. It is always fun to imagine what it looked like when at it’s prime, bustling with activity as travelers passed in and out of the town. Nature and time have their way with the structure once full of a different kind of life.

There is a new Green Microgym over in Portland that generates nearly 40% of it’s own electricity.
It uses the energy from solar panels and the exercise machines to produce the electricity. A set of 4 special bikes call the Human Dynamo can produce up to 600 watts of energy an hour!! There is a long list of ways they are green.

PickupPal: This is a neat service to find and offer rides to other people and their stuff. It is a great way to do a part to help the environment by reducing the number of cars on the road. So far, PickupPal users have clocked in over 637,000 miles, which translates into over 760,000 pounds of CO2 that are not being released into the air!
I’m all signed up and offered my ride around town. I’ll have to spread the word around locally!

It tells the story of 2 people that adopted a lion cub which they released into the wild when it became too large after a year. Years later they wanted to go visit the lion, but were told he wouldn’t remember them and would pose a danger to them.

I just found a really neat and ultra informative thing on a friend’s Myspace profile. It’s a flash application that show some key statistics about the earth, disease and other incidents in a live fashion by calculating their occurences based on varying sources of data. It really should open people’s eyes to how real these troubling issues are and that they are always happening.
Things it calculates include:
-
- World Population
- Population Growth
