I was particularly drawn to the post about Abkhazia’s Abandoned Railway. There are some really beautiful photographs of a former USSR railroad station. Taken by Ilya Varlamov, the photographs show a time long since past. It is always fun to imagine what it looked like when at it’s prime, bustling with activity as travelers passed in and out of the town. Nature and time have their way with the structure once full of a different kind of life.
I just found a really neat and ultra informative thing on a friend’s Myspace profile. It’s a flash application that show some key statistics about the earth, disease and other incidents in a live fashion by calculating their occurences based on varying sources of data. It really should open people’s eyes to how real these troubling issues are and that they are always happening.
Here are some really interesting and stark facts about oil consumption in the U.S., along with a great graphic from the New York Times. It is very disheartening to see how the U.S. has done little to try to reduce our dependence on oil and in fact has increased our relience by leaps and bounds compared to other countries.
> The world burns 85 million barrels of petroleum daily.
I ran across this video of a really interesting shower system from a company called Quench. It has a “recycle” mode for when you are not lathering or shampooing, which will take a gallon of water and simply circulate it over and over so you can take a shower as long as you like without pulling more than the 1 gallon that is being circulated continuously. Pretty neat stuff.
